# Does unsubscribing affect YouTube's recommendations? — Adinand Channel Sorter

**Partly — and which part matters more than the yes-or-no.** Unsubscribing changes one feed completely and another much less. People who expect the second result from the first action come away thinking unsubscribing “did nothing”, when it did exactly what it is for.

## What unsubscribing definitely changes: your Subscriptions feed

This half is direct. YouTube says the “Subscriptions feed, available on both mobile and a computer, will show any recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions” (*YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4489286?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid). That is a list built from one input — the channels you follow — so **removing a channel removes its uploads from that feed.** No retraining, no ambiguity. If your complaint is “my Subscriptions tab is unusable”, unsubscribing is the correct and complete fix.

## What it mostly doesn't change: Home

Home runs on different fuel. The same page says “The Home tab also shows videos from your subscriptions, along with recommendations for channels or videos that you may be interested in.” The first half of that sentence follows your list; for the second half, YouTube's pages on history and recommendations name the inputs (*YouTube Help: View, delete, or turn on or off watch history*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/95725?hl=en) (*YouTube Help: Manage your recommendations & search results*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6342839?hl=en):

- “YouTube watch history makes it easy to find videos you recently watched, and, when it's turned on, allows us to give relevant video recommendations.”
- “Your recommendations and search results are also based on videos that you've liked.”
- “YouTube may also use data from your Google Account activity to influence your recommendations, search results, in-app notifications, and suggested videos in other places.”

Watch history, likes, account activity. **None of those three pages names your subscription list, but YouTube's page on its recommendation system does**: it says the system factors in "channels a user subscribes to" (*YouTube Help: YouTube's Recommendation System*, read 8 October 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/16533387?hl=en). Subscriptions are one input among several, and YouTube does not say how much weight they carry — so a channel you unsubscribe from but keep clicking on can still turn up on Home, and that is consistent behaviour rather than a bug.

## Why unsubscribing sometimes seems to fix Home anyway

*Observation, not a YouTube claim:* people rarely unsubscribe from a channel and then keep watching it. The two changes usually happen together — you lose interest, you stop clicking, *and* you unsubscribe — and by the inputs above it is the stopping-clicking half that the recommendations respond to. Unsubscribing gets the credit; watching less did the work. Which is also why unsubscribing from a channel you still watch changes Home so little.

## The levers that do change Home

YouTube provides its own controls for the recommendation half — per-item feedback such as **Not interested** and **Don't recommend channel**, and turning off or deleting your watch history (*YouTube Help: Manage your recommendations & search results*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6342839?hl=en). Those are the right tool for “stop showing me this”, and the biggest one has a consequence worth reading before you use it: [how to reset your YouTube recommendations](https://channelsorter.com/answers/reset-youtube-recommendations/) walks all three, in YouTube's own words.

## Where Adinand Channel Sorter fits

Only on the half unsubscribing can actually fix. [Adinand Channel Sorter](https://channelsorter.com/) organises the channels you follow into categories and shows **which have gone quiet** and **which flood your feed** — the review that makes pruning possible — working on your device, with no third-party servers. Every removal is one you explicitly selected and confirmed, and **Undo** re-subscribes you and puts the channel back in its category. What it reads is your subscription list and each channel's upload history, not your watch history, and it offers no recommendation controls; for Home, use YouTube's controls above.
