# How to reset your YouTube recommendations — Adinand Channel Sorter

**YouTube gives you three levers, and they are not interchangeable.** Ranked from the one most people should reach for first to the one that does something bigger than “reset”. Unless marked otherwise, the steps and quotations below come from YouTube's help pages on recommendations and on watch history (*YouTube Help: Manage your recommendations & search results*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6342839?hl=en) (*YouTube Help: View, delete, or turn on or off watch history*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/95725?hl=en).

## Lever 1: per-item feedback (start here)

The most precise control, and the one that costs you nothing else. YouTube's steps: “Click More next to the title of the video, playlist, post, or section on Home. Click Not interested.” For a whole channel rather than one video, YouTube says to “Select Don't recommend channel or Don't recommend posts from channel.”

This is reversible on YouTube's own terms: “If you don't want your ‘Not interested’ and ‘Don't recommend channel’ feedback to influence your recommendations, you can clear it.” *Observation, not a YouTube claim:* used steadily during normal watching, this is the lever aimed most directly at Home — and it leaves everything else intact.

## Lever 2: deleting watch history (read this part first)

YouTube: “If you delete some or all of your watch history, YouTube won't base future video recommendations on that content.” Straightforward for a targeted delete — remove the binge you regret, stop it feeding Home.

Two costs to know before you tap anything. First, the watch-history page carries this note: “Using DELETE to delete your watch history will also delete your search history from the selected time frame.” The delete takes your search history with it, not just your watches. Second, the page describes no way to undo a deletion, so treat it as permanent: this is a delete, not a pause.

**A full clear is a different thing, and this is the sentence that surprises people:** “If you have no relevant or significant recent watch history and have indicated you do not wish to receive future recommendations based on that history, YouTube features like recommendations on the YouTube homepage are removed.” The recommendations page says the same thing more briefly: “If you don't want video recommendations on Home, you can delete and turn off your watch history.”

Read it plainly: **clear everything and turn history off, and you may not get a blank-slate set of recommendations — you may get no homepage recommendations at all.** That is a legitimate choice, and for some people it is the point. It is just not what “reset” usually means, so decide which one you are asking for before you clear.

## Lever 3: pausing history

If you want the current recommendations left alone but future watching to stop influencing them: “You can turn off your watch or search history when you don't want your watches or searches to influence future recommendations, search results, and other YouTube experiences that rely on your history.” The trade-off is stated just as plainly — “Any videos that you watch while history is turned off won't show up in your history” — so finding something again later gets harder.

Both history levers are managed from My Activity: [myactivity.google.com](https://myactivity.google.com).

## What none of this touches: your Subscriptions feed

Worth being explicit, because it is where the effort most often lands in the wrong place. YouTube's subscriptions help says the “Subscriptions feed, available on both mobile and a computer, will show any recently uploaded videos from your subscriptions” (*YouTube Help: Subscribe to YouTube channels*, read 23 September 2026 — https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4489286?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid). That feed is built from one input — the channels you follow. **No amount of “Not interested”, and no history change, alters which channels are on that list.** That half you control directly, by deciding which subscriptions you keep — which is [the other half of this question](https://channelsorter.com/answers/does-unsubscribing-affect-the-algorithm/).

## Where Adinand Channel Sorter fits

Only on the subscriptions half — the half YouTube's recommendation controls deliberately leave alone. [Adinand Channel Sorter](https://channelsorter.com/) organises the channels you follow into categories and shows **which have gone quiet** and **which flood your feed**, so pruning becomes a decision instead of an archaeology project. It works on your device, with no third-party servers. It reads your subscriptions and each channel's upload history — not your watch history — and it has no recommendation controls of its own. It removes only the channels you explicitly select and confirm, never automatically, and **Undo** re-subscribes you and puts the channel back in its category.
